e-News September 2010

Home is where the art is.

‘Recycled Rabbits

In August, Auckland celebrated the opening of the TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre at the Pah Homestead, Hillsborough, the new home of the Collection of the James Wallace Arts Trust. Many a nail will be bitten there on the evening of the 6th when the winner of the 2010 Wallace Art Awards will be announced.

This time last month, the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne was a hive of frenzied activity in preparation for the opening of Melbourne Art Fair 2010.  Three Auckland galleries waved the flag for Aotearoa amidst exhibitors from across Australia, Hong Kong, Oskaka and Calgary. It was a great week and a great fair - despite the weather.

Judging by the number of familiar faces we encountered there, quite a few Kiwis seized the opportunity to cross the ditch and get a winter art fix. Next August the trip will be to Auckland. Aren’t we fortunate to have something to look forward to every year?  Warning: 11 months goes by fast. Start saving now.

Meantime, don’t resist the urge to look at some of the exciting new shows that announce the coming of spring – at long last.
