A Big Weekend

Phew! After a fabulous weekend at the Fair, I’m gradually emerging from under the mountain of email, paperwork and bubble-wrap.

Auckland Art Fair 2009 was a huge success thanks to all of you who came along and made it so. Congratulations and a HUGE thank-you to our exhibitors and artists, our sponsors and suppliers and our fabulous and indefatigable team on site.

In rain and shine, the Fair enjoyed three days of sales, smiles and queues and attracted approximately 12,000 visitors.
Many of these visitors left with nicely wrapped packages and the galleries are very happy with both sales and feedback on their exhibits. It just shows that in an economic downturn, the art speculators tend to drop off, but collectors – with an eye on the bigger picture – continue to collect.

When the batteries are re-charged, I will start all over again on the next one and look forward to seeing you all - same time, same venue - at Auckland Art Fair 2011.

In the meantime, I will keep in touch through regular email newsletters and keep you posted on significant exhibitions and happenings in the curious world of contemporary art.

Extend your art fair experience and make sure you continue to take in some of the many great exhibitions that take place at galleries near you. There are surprises around every corner.

Happy art travels…

The Art Party of the Year

More than 750 people attended the Vernissage on Thursday night. Celebrities, collectors, curators, and a few canines joined the artists and gallerists for a night of festivity and merriment and everyone left with full hearts if not full stomachs.

Trans-Tasman Art Traffic

40 collectors from Australia attended the 2009 Fair and a number of significant New Zealand works will be travelling back across the Tasman with them.

But the traffic wasn’t all one way. A major new video work by ex-pat Kiwi Daniel Von Sturmer, shown by Melbourne gallery Anna Schwartz Gallery, was purchased by a public collection here in NZ, so the Fair has helped bring work by Kiwis back to the homeland.

Auckland Art Fair Among the Best

Keynote speaker Don Thompson was very impressed by the Auckland Art Fair saying it was among the best he has attended in the world.

“Last year there were 230 art fairs worldwide. This year, there are only 140. We’ve seen the demise of some major fairs like Moscow, but the Auckland Art Fair seems to be gathering momentum.”

“We were at the Toronto Art Fair earlier this year and while there was a lot of interest, there weren’t many sales. Here we’ve seen strong sales, which is great for the galleries and helps sustain the event.”

Thompson delivered the Fair’s keynote lecture, Sharks in the Antipodes, to a sell-out crowd on Friday 1 May.
