e-News February 2009

Shark infested waters

Happy 2009 everyone. Hope you are enjoying this long, hot summer. We have been busy behind the scenes, making sure that Auckland Art Fair 2009 is a bright spot amidst the fire, floods and persistent economic gloom.

The Galleries taking part in this year’s fair represent the leading edge of gallery practice and the exhibtions they have put together, featuring prominent and promising artists from all over New Zealand and Australia, will inspire and challenge visitors and participants alike.

New Art Now, the collectible book/catalogue published by Random House NZ, was dispatched to the printer last month and will be launched the week of the fair. With 5 lively essays by leading art commentators and full colour highlights of artworks in the fair, it promises to be both beautiful and interesting.

Our big announcement this month is that we have confirmed our keynote speaker: Don Thompson, author of ‘The $12 Million Stuffed Shark’. Don’s book is the first to examine some of the economic paradoxes of contemporary art market. Presented by ANZ Private Bank, Don will deliver the keynote lecture on Friday 1 May. Bookings essential. Visit our website for ticket details: www.aucklandartfair.co.nz

While we work away here, the art scene on both sides of the Tasman continues to deliver great shows and unique experiences from local and international artists. Make sure you visit an exhibition or two this month. A few highlights to get you started…
